Finding an activity

A good way to find an activity which you might be interested in is to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What activities would I like to try?
  • Are there any social opportunities?
  • What age group am I in?

Some activities have a cost, and some are free. If there is any cost it will say so in the activity listing. Some activities require special clothing or footwear. If you need special clothing or footwear it will say so in the listing.

All activities have contact details listed, so you can call up to find out more. If you would like information about supervised services (for example physiotherapy) you can contact Commonwealth Carelink on 1800 052 222.

Health Benefits of Exercise

30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day is very good for your health. And it doesn't have to be 30 minutes all in one go - three 10 minute sessions is just as good for your health. Performing activities like walking, swimming, dancing or cycling to a level which causes a small, but noticeable, increase in your breathing rate will benefit your health.

Benefits of being active include:

  • Feeling better, more alert and less anxious
  • Less chance of heart problems, diabetes, and some cancers
  • Improved blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and fitness.
  • Reduction in the risk of falls.

Before you Start Exercising

Before you first start exercise it is a good idea to discuss your plans with your doctor especially if:

  • You haven't exercised for a long time
  • You have a family history of heart disease
  • You have a chronic health condition eg: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, asthma
  • You are over the age of 65
  • You experience chest pain during physical activity
  • Moderate physical activity makes you breathless
  • You have high blood pressure

It is always wiser to select an activity with a low difficulty rating and then progress to an activity with a higher difficulty rating. Make sure you remember to:

  • Warm up before you begin exercising with gentle walking
  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after physical activity - especially in summer.
  • Be Sunsmart - wear a hat and sunscreen
  • Dress in loose clothing for cooling and adjust for weather conditions
  • Wear flat, lace up shoes with wide heel and good ankle support
  • If your breathing becomes uncomfortable or if you feel pain, dizzy or nauseous slow down or stop.
  • Enjoy yourself!
